Spelling

Thank you for being interested in how you can support your child's spelling!

In May 2013 we saw the introduction of a SPaG test (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) as part of the suite of tests sat by Year 6 children.   The outcomes for our school are summarised in the table below:

Absent

Below 3

Level 3

Level 4

Level 5

3%

(1 child)

0

30%

(9 children)

13%

(4 children)

53%

(16 children)

Notice how many children achieved a level 5!  How fantastic is that!  When analysing why 9 children did not achieve the Year 6 age related expectations of a level 4, it was very apparent that it was the spelling aspect that the children did not do well at.  In fact, in this cohort of children it appeared that if they could spell, they achieved at level 5!

To build on this success, spelling is an area that we will be paying special attention to this year.  We thought it would be useful for you to see the spelling curriculum, broken down into:

  • Phonics for the Infants
  • Years 3 & 4 spelling patterns, together with the word list showing the patterns that they are expected to be able to spell.
  • Years 5 & 6 spelling patterns, together with the word list that they are expected to be able to spell.

We aim to make every child a great speller at Thorogate School and the following pages explain how we do it!  If you would like any further information, please contact your child's class teacher.
